Bhirarkanika, the land of mangroves menacing estuarine crocodiles and marine turties, is one of the majortourist destinations in thev coastal region of the state of orissa. The wetland is represented by asa many as 3 protected Areas, namely BhitarkanikaNational Park,Bhitarkanika Santuary, And Gahirmatha(Marine)wildLife sannctuary.


Bhitarkanika is a unique habitat of mangrove forest criss-crossed with numerous creeks and mud flats located in kendrapara Districts of orissa. One of the largest mangrove systems in india. Bhitarkanika is home to diverse flora and fauna, some of which are endemic.


The Bhitarkanika Mangroves are home to 55 of India's 58 known mangrove species. The mangroves harbor one of India's largest populations of salt-water crocodiles and Gahirmatha Beach which separates the mangroves from the Bay of Bengal, is the world's most important nesting beach for Olive Ridley Turtles.


Some wildlife experts are of the opinion that the largest saltwater crocodile ever was in Bhitarkanika, measuring an estimated 23 feet (7.0 m) which could be traced from the skull preserved by the Kanika Royal Family. The crocodile was shot near Dhamara in 1926, and later its skull was preserved by the then Kanika King. Crocodile experts estimate the animal to have been between 20 feet (6.1 m) and 23 feet (7.0 m) long, as the size of the skull was measured one ninth of the total length of the body. The wetland also hosts a large and diverse population of resident and migratory birds. Rhesus monkey, leopard, leopard cat, fishing cat, jungle cat, small Indian civet cat, toddy cat, common mongoose, jackal, striped hyena, Indian fox, wild pig, Indian porcupine, mole rat, long tailed tree mouse, spotted deer, sambar, common otter, smooth Indian otter are also found here


Many birds you can find in Bhitorkanika. Kingfishers such as BROWN-WINGED KINGFISHER,BLACK-APPED,COLLARED,CRESTED,PIED,STORK-BILLED,COMMON AND SOME MAIGRATING BIRDS BAR-HEADED GOOSE,RUDDY SHELDUCK,RED-CRESTED POCHARD etc.

Dangmal: Situated on the heart of the National Park. it is the cynosure of Bhitarkanika having highest animal concentration. Herds of Spooted deer, huge crocodiles along the mudflats will greet you. once you are ther. Forest rest house are available in Dangmal.

 

 

Bhitorkanika Forest Block: Located on the opposite side of Dangamal across the river Bhitarkanika meadow spreads over 300 Hac. Herds of deers, wildboar and flocks of resident and migratory birds can be seen from the Watch Tower at Baga Gahana.

 


Ekakula(babubali,Udabali&Ekakulansi): Most secluded part and situated north of the National Park, Ekakula faces the sea on the side and maipura river on the other. Ekakula mangroves forests, Tranquil beach is added attraction. Ekakula beach is a lonely beach in Orissa . There are nobody available except you.


Habalikhati: Once famous sight for Olive Ridlay Sea Turtle Research Center .Habalikhati is situated on the sea beach. It buis approachable from Baunasagarh River through a winding Nature Trail.


Kalibhanjadia: Largest island of Bhitarkanika , Kalibhanjadia is 8 kms long and about 1 km wide located on North of the National Park in Dharma River contains highest bio-driversity of mangrove vegetation.


Entry Point: Khola and Gupti are the two main entry points to enter the most sought-after destination, Bhitarkanika National Park. Visitors should take entry permit from the Forest Check Gate at Khola and Gupti. Private boats are also available at JAYANAGAR & CHANDABALI.


Climate: Bhitarkanika National Park is near to the east-coast of Bay of Bengal and hence the weather at Bhitarkanika remains wet and humid. The temperature varies between 14 degree Celsius in winter to 40 degree Celsius in Summer.
